Want to rid yourself of a Urinary Tract Infection (UTI’s) without needing to use prescribed antibiotics?

It is possible to stop the vicious Urinary Tract Infection cycle!

After years of chronic UTI’s, popping antibiotics like candy, and having a severe reaction to the fluoroquinolone antibiotic, Cipro, I was desperate to find relief in any other form.

I saw a Naturopath and obsessively searched the Internet to find any natural remedy to cure my UTI pain without antibiotics. I’ve tested them all to figure out which treatments worked best for my chronic bladder infections.

Urinary tract infections are commonly treated with prescription antibiotics. However, it is increasingly being recognized that using antibiotics frequently may contribute to recurring UTI’s and increased dependency on antibiotic use may further weaken the immune system by disrupting the gut microbiome.

Natural remedies can help provide an effective alternative to prescription antibiotics and the irreversible side effects that come with them.

I am not a doctor and I am NOT saying antibiotics should never be used. I am only sharing my personal experience after years of trial and error. If your symptoms last longer than 3 days after using my recommendation, you should go see your doctor, get a culture and find the correct antibiotic to kick the infection.

Urinary Tract Infection Natural Protocol:

DAY 1-3:

I try to drink 10-15 cups/day during active infections so I can pee out those fuckers (aka, bacteria). STAY HYDRATED.

D-Mannose is a natural sugar that provides a preferred surface for E. Coli bacteria to attach to, preventing them from sticking to the walls of the bladder and lower urinary tract. The E. Coli bacteria are then removed from the bladder during urination.

D-Mannose is diabetic safe. It is not metabolized like other sugars, so it has a very minimal impact on blood sugar regulation.

This will only help your infection if the bacteria is E. Coli.

I have Interstitial Cystitis/Bladder Pain Syndrome, and getting an infection adds on to the pain my bladder already feels and sets back my progress in healing my bladder wall. Because of this, I take D-mannose even when I don’t have an infection, as a preventative measure.

Uva Ursi is antimicrobial, diuretic, and has anti-inflammatory properties. This was the go-to herb used for UTI treatment, before antibiotics got in the picture. It is a great natural remedy for UTI’s and is best taken at the first sign of UTI symptoms.

Uva Ursi is not to be taken during pregnancy.

Marshmallow Root: 3 pills, 2 times a day

Marshmallow Root helps soothe the urethral lining and reduce inflammation. A must when battling infections, especially recurrent. I use this daily to ease and sooth my IC/BPS flare ups.

Probiotics: 1-2 pills per day

The best front-line fighters for urinary tract health are probiotics, and lots of them! I experienced success in reducing my recurrent UTI by adding probiotics daily. If you can tolerate dairy, kefir is a great source of natural probiotics. My Naturopath recommended the high quality probiotic stated above, due to the good bacteria specifically for pelvic health.

Baking Soda: Mix 1 tsp in 8oz. glass of water when it feels like you’re peeing razorblades

You may only need this on the first day of the infection but baking soda is a great natural pain reliever for UTIs AND IC/BPS flares. Baking soda prevents the spread of infection by neutralizing acidic urine. Changing the acidity of your urine can also lessen the burning pain.

DAY 4-7:

D-Mannose Powder: 1 tsp in morning and evening glass of water or beverage of choice

I bring down my water intake to about 8-10 glasses per day. STAY HYDRATED.

Uva Ursi Tablets: 3 pills, 2 times a day

If the debilitating burning and pain has stopped, instead of 3 times a day, only take the 3 pill dose, 2 times per day. Stop at 7 days.

The maximum duration I use Uva Ursi consecutively is 7 days. My Naturopath told me it can have an effect on the liver, so I only use it when needed. If it is not helping, I visit my doctor and get on antibiotics before the risk of infection spreading to my kidneys.

Marshmallow Root: 3 pills, 2 times a day

You can stop after your infection has been resolved or if you live with chronic bladder pain, you can continue to take it every day.

Probiotics: 1-2 pills per day

Did I mention that the best front-line fighters for pelvic and urinary tract health are probiotics?! Keep on taking them.

To prevent infection during triggering events like exercise, intimacy and travelling, I will take these steps:
  • increase my D-Mannose water intake around events
  • take 3 Uva Ursi before intimacy and 3 pills/day, for 3 days following

With this protocol, treating my urinary tract infections has become a lot more manageable because I can start it at the very first signs of an oncoming infection. I don’t have side effects from any of these supplements, so I have piece of mind knowing my body doesn’t have to go through a strong round of antibiotics. I am also able to have more control over my UTI’s. I went from having a UTI almost every month to not experiencing a UTI caused by my regular triggers.

Take this guide into consideration if you’re wanting another option in fighting your chronic UTI’s without antibiotics. However, before taking any of these supplements, check with your healthcare team to ensure these are safe for you to take.
